I don’t know how many of you struggle to keep God’s attitude throughout the day, but some days can be really tough for me.  What I want to talk with you about today is how to keep God’s attitude all day.

So what is a God attitude? To me this means that we approach every situation in our day being an example of who God is. We approach the day being dependent on His guidance and showing His love, joy, and peace to those around us.

Morning
Do you remember the breakfast ads when we were kids?  The cereal companies would tell us that a good start to every day began with a balanced breakfast. Breakfast was the foundation we were supposed to build the rest of our day on.  I believe that with God it is no different. In Psalm 63:1 it says, “God, thou art My God; early will I seek thee: My soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee In a dry and thirsty land, where no water is.

The first thing that you do when you get up in the morning is going to set the tone for the rest of the day. So in the morning, before my feet ever touch the floor, I try to say a prayer.  I have found that if I get on my phone or do anything else first, it will set the tone for my day as well. So, I have to make a choice in the morning: Am I going to turn towards the world and the things of the world and set my mind on that for the day?  Or am I going to turn towards God and the things of God and set my mind towards that for the day?

Prayers in the morning are prayers of Thanksgiving: to have wisdom during the day and to have strength to make it through . . . especially if you are not a morning person.  I also try to read some scripture before starting my day.  I have found that in the morning people are less likely to bother me, and I’m more likely to have quiet time where I can read and talk with God uninterrupted. There isn’t necessarily anything special about studying first thing in the morning. However, I have found that it sets the tone for my day, and I am more likely to get it done before the cares of life begin to interfere with it.

Afternoon
The workday can present some real challenges for me in keeping my God attitude. The cares of life start to sink in, and I forget about what God wants me to do or has promised me. So for me, what I have to do is make a real effort to talk with God when I am working. Trust me, on the farm there is always a reason to talk with God.

Whenever a problem comes up, I try to ask for His wisdom in solving it. Then when it works out, I can thank Him for helping me, and I can better see that He is with me. When I see something that catches my eye, I praise Him for all the wonderful things He has created, like baby goats, green grass, fiery sunsets, and even interesting bugs.

Finally, when things don’t go how I want, I thank Him for being in control, so I don’t have to worry and fret. I try to thank Him for any situation I am in – tire blows out, plow falls off, my kids run over something.

“Thank you, Lord, for what you are teaching me.
Thank you for moving me to who you want me to be.
Thank you, Lord, for having a plan even when I can’t see it.
Thank you, Lord, for giving me purpose and letting me work with You.”

“In EVERYthing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
– 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Nighttime
If you are like me, sometimes when everything slows down, that is when I worry. I think about everything that didn’t get done in the day. This can be tough, because this is when I spend time with my wife and kids.  If I am distracted, they don’t always get the best of me.  When I am tired, I have a tendency to do anything to NOT think about the day: Facebook, YouTube, the news.

Something that I think would help with this is putting away my phone then taking a minute to thank God for the day He has given: all the beauty, all the successes, and all the things I didn’t like.  I can thank Him for having a plan today.  Then ask for my mind to be put at ease and focused on my family knowing that He will have a plan for tomorrow.  I know that if He was in control today, He will be tomorrow as well.

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”
– Hebrews 13:8

I know that this is not a complete list of how to have a God attitude during the day.  However, I hope it gives you some idea of how to walk with His love, joy, and peace showing who He is and spreading His love to those around you.
