Aunt Jill is our resident arborist, so when she harvested this year’s apple crop, Nana asked her for an apple dessert.  The family gobbled it up in one meal, so Nana decided to share this recipe for everyone to enjoy.  If you have more apples that you know what to do with, try making apple pie filling or a good ol’ apple pie.

Ingredients
  • ½ stick of butter
  • 10 cups of peeled and sliced tart sweet apples
  • ½ cup of brown sugar or more to taste
  • 2 teaspoons of cinnamon
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 white or yellow cake mix
  • 2 sticks of butter, sliced
  • caramel syrup
  • vanilla ice cream (optional)

Instructions
  • Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat, then add apple slices, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  • Sauté until a syrup forms and apples are cooked but still crunchy.
  • Dump apples and syrup into a greased 9×13 pan.
  • Evenly cover apples with cake mix. “Sprinkle” top of cake mix with slices of butter.
  • Bake in a 350-degree Fahrenheit oven for 55 minutes.
  • Serve warm and drizzle caramel syrup over the top of each serving.  That’s what makes this recipe so delicious.
  • To make it even more delicious, serve vanilla ice cream on top.
